Fail Spectacularly
What if the thing that cracked you wide open is the very thing that sets you free?
We live in a world drunk on early success. Nineteen-year-old CEOs. Six-year-old pianists. Twelve-year-old chess wizards with foreheads like satellite dishes. Meanwhile, the rest of us sit there feeling defective because we haven’t “made it” by breakfast. It’s ridiculous.
But let me tell you something raw. Failure isn’t a flaw in your system. It’s the factory reset.
Take Edison. Four months in school. The teacher calls him mentally deficient. His mother pulls him out, teaches him herself. That failure was his starting gun. He goes on to light up the world and now we use his invention to scroll TikTok at 2 AM and ignore our own potential.
Failure is nature’s way of testing if you really mean it or if you were just playing around. You say you want it. Great. Let’s see how you handle being kicked out, laughed at, broke, ignored, and doubted by relatives who only remember your number when they’re stuck somewhere with no fare.
Systems love conformity. The well-behaved student. The quiet employee. The good boy who recites the national anthem but never colours outside the lines. But genius. Genius has bad handwriting. Genius skips class. Genius gets told to be serious while sketching rockets on the back of homework.
Beethoven didn’t just break the rules of music. He smashed the piano lid on them and kept going even when silence swallowed his hearing. Disney was fired for lacking imagination. Fired. The man went on to make rats wear gloves and still somehow bring tears to grown men. Make it make sense.
When you fail, when the plan falls flat, it’s not a curse. It’s a crooked invitation to build your own door. A splintery, shaky, ghetto-fabulous door made of second-hand wood and stubbornness. And behind that door. Your voice. Your real one.
Darwin’s father told him, you care about nothing but your fantasies. That’s African Dad code for why can’t you be like your cousin who sells insurance. But Darwin turned those fantasies into a theory that rewrote science. Einstein didn’t speak until four. People thought he was slow. Then he turned around and rearranged the universe. That’s the vibe.
You know who else stumbled forward. Rodin. Rejected by art school three times. They said he was an idiot. At 37, he sculpts The Age of Bronze, a statue so real people accused him of cheating. Joke’s on them. He was just ahead of his time.
Disney. His first company flopped harder than a soggy samosa. Oprah. Fired from TV. Jobs. Kicked out of Apple. J.K. Rowling. Twelve rejection letters and one baby in her arms. That baby probably heard her mutter, one day, we’ll show them. And they did.
Me. I’ve bombed more times than a cheap generator in a blackout. Watched doors shut. Watched my words gather dust in notebooks no one cared to read. Until one line cracked the dam. That first no was seasoning. What matters is what you cook with it.
Imagine if Edison behaved. If Disney obeyed. If Darwin listened. We’d be sitting in the dark, watching nothing, still thinking God made giraffes just for fun.
So let me ask you. What failure in your life is secretly a slingshot. Whose opinion are you dragging around like a bad suitcase. What part of you have you buried because someone else couldn’t see the vision.
This life isn’t a clean staircase. It’s a muddy hill. You climb. You slide. Sometimes you sit and sob. Sometimes you belly-laugh mid-slide because you realize you’re still climbing.
Failure doesn’t mean you’re not chosen. Sometimes it means you’re too rare for the system to label. Edison failed ten thousand times. Beethoven kept composing with his ears switched off. Darwin chased beetles while his family whispered behind his back.
And you. You’re still here. Still showing up with broken notes and cracked knuckles. That’s more than most.
So pick up your mess. Grab your pain like a brush and paint something that makes the silence weep. Your story isn’t finished. Your worst moment might just be your holy beginning.
The orchestra’s warming up.
The world is listening.
Play your broken song anyway.
And make them clap.
